A local teacher, who lives in East Whiteland Township, and a local speech therapist approached the Township in 2021 about placing communication boards in Township parks. They informed the Township that children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Apraixa and/or Speech Language Impairment often have difficulties with communication. Many children with these diagnoses benefit from supplementing their verbal speech with a form of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). A playground communication board is a form AAC. These boards would help facilitate communication between children with communication needs and their communication partners; in other words, children will be able to express their wants/needs and to connect with other children. The picture icons on the board allow children with communication needs to identify which playground equipment they want to enjoy and to convey how they are feeling.
Communications boards were recently installed in Battle of the Clouds, Down East, and Valley Creek Parks. Please visit these parks to see the signs for yourself!
